WANTED
The Department of Licensing, Washington Motorcycle Safety Program (WMSP) is looking for a few good motorcyclists to train Washington residents to be skilled and safe motorcyclists.
Requirements:
-- Own and operate your own motorcycle
-- Above average reading skills
-- Excellent communication skills
-- A strong desire to share your experience and safe riding skills with other beginning
and experienced riders.
The WMSP conducts motorcycle training programs throughout the state through contracts with private entities, motorcycle dealers and Parks and Recreation Departments. These contractors offer beginning and experienced rider courses to everyone wanting to learn to ride or improve their skills. Skills learned in these classes help riders prevent accidents -- making the road safer for everyone, but we need help from the experts.
Interested? The WMSP conducts instructor preparation workshops throughout the state annually for riders interested in becoming certified Motorcycle Safety Foundation/Washington Motorcycle Safety Program instructors. These courses are taught by Chief Instructors certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
It Is Not Easy. The workshop is an intense 60-plus hour program which covers every aspect of safe motorcycling from proper riding gear and motorcycle preparation to advanced emergency riding maneuvers. Instructor candidates must attend the entire workshop and should plan on spending some time on outside study. At the end of the course, you will teach a class of novice riders under the supervision of a Chief Instructor. In order to successfully complete the course, you must pass a knowledge test, on-cycle skills test, and student teaching component.
Still Interested? Contact Carl Spurgeon, WMSP Coordinator at 1125 Washington Street S.E., Olympia, WA 98504, or phone 1-800-962-9010 extension 8, to get an application for the next instructor preparation course. You will be told where to send the completed application to obtain a sponsor. The sponsor will interview you and send completed application to WMSP. Once you have successfully completed the instructor workshop, you will be eligible to teach motorcycle safety classes and may be hired by any of the WMSP training sites.
